My first visit to Greece made me really addicted. It was love at first sight. It was also the first foreign country I visited. I was 11 years old and could not wait to see the sea. We drove all the way down from Hungary and took about 20 hours to get there. As soon as I got out of the car, looked around and smelled the air, I was fascinated and felt like I was in paradise.
The sea was just as beautiful as I had imagined, but that was not why my heart beat faster. I am a history freak, always been, and alone the thought of what happened there thousands of years ago and seeing the ancient ruins gave me goosebumps. Over the years I have gone back several times and visited different places, either with the family or with friends. It’s such a huge country and there is so much to see there, I do not think I’ll ever get enough of it.
The food, like any Mediterranean cuisine, is perfect to me. When I close my eyes and think about it, I smell the dried oregano, fish, honey, filo pastry, lots of vegetables, mint, olives and goat’s cheese. The simplest ingredients, but all with great flavors. And of course the lamb. I’m sure you all saw the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Now that I have some Greek friends, I have to agree with everything they say in the movie about lamb.
Due to the size of the country, the cuisine changes from region to region. It does not matter what part of the country you visit, you are immediately confronted with all the amazing flavors. I have to go there again soon and collect new memories of this wonderful country and of course discover new recipes.
